The owners asked our firm to make their existing cottage more accommodating to their growing family by providing additional living, dining, kitchen, and bedroom space while at the same time creating separate zones for each generation.

Many owners of vacation homes are finding that, as many other things change in their lives, one thing remains constant-their cottage. This second home for many families often resiliently endures the test of time as a gathering place for reunions and the rekindling of memories. When families grow their cottage needs to grow with them.

Working within this context we transformed the lower level into a young peoples beach room. Living, Dining, Kitchen and Screen Porch areas on the main floor were expanded and a Private Master Suite and Bath area were developed. An Upper level was added to provide three additional bedrooms and one bath for use by extended family members. These changes were made while preserving as many lake views as possible.

A long and narrow (60' wide) lot provided a challenge in articulating the entry facade and minimizing the presence of the parking area directly in front of the home. Our solution was to create an auto court where on the south side of the home, through a series of freestanding gateway trellises, the eye is directed past the parking court towards the entry to a transparent screen porch that replaces the flat garage doors while a rose arbor and covered storage building frame the entry trellis.

The view of Lake Michigan greets you at the front door. Once inside, inviting light walls and natural maple trim frame panoramic vistas of the dunes, beach and lake beyond. Gray/green slate counter tops, floors, and fireplace hearth articulate functional areas. A wide deck, with steel and wood railings, captures the sense of a maritime experience.
